Charles Darwin himself had this to say when he was riding the HMS Beagle through Tierra del Fuego: “Rock, ice, snow, wind, and water, all warring with each other yet combined against man, here reigned in absolute sovereignty.” First settled by the region's indigenous Yámana people and later colonized by British missionaries in 1870, this city of just under 150,000 is dramatically perched between the Martial Mountains, Ushuaia Bay, and the Beagle Channel. In recent years, tourism to Antarctica has grown in popularity. Visitors can take cruises to the continent, allowing them to experience its unique landscape, wildlife, and scientific stations. Antarctica is known for its incredibly cold temperatures, with some of the lowest ever recorded on the planet. The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It contains around 90% of the world's ice and roughly 70% of the planet's fresh water. The ice can reach depths of over 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) in some places. Despite its harsh conditions, Antarctica is home to a surprising amount of wildlife. Penguins, seals, whales, and various seabirds are among the species that thrive in the coastal regions and surrounding waters. It serves as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet's most extreme environments. A natural paradise, Antarctica is an experience beyond compare. • Meals : Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner on board.

Day 16

ELEPHANT ISLAND, ANTARCTICA

  • We will reach Elephant Island in Antarctica. Elephant Island is one of the outermost of the South Shetland Islands. The roots of its name are argued to be one of two reasons. Either the fact that Elephant seals were seen hauled out here in large numbers by the first person to discover and map the island, Captain George Powell in 1821, or that the island’s shape is uncannily like that of a baby elephant’s head with trunk extended! Elephant Island is an ice-covered, mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands, in the Southern Ocean. The island is situated 245 kilometers north-northeast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and 935 kilometers. The island remained unexplored for many years thanks in part to its lack of resources and partly because of its steep volcanic rocks, presenting few landing points. The main attraction here is the tiny rocky beach at Point Wild where nearly two dozen men were stranded for four and a half months in 1916 during Sir Ernest Shackleton’s doomed “Endurance” expedition, when their ship broke up in pack ice. Remarkably, all survived after Shackleton improbably made his way by lifeboat to South Georgia Island to find help. A glimpse at the remote, cramped beach offers a stark reminder of one of history’s most incredible survival stories. This stunning tale of endurance, determination, and the human spirit is brought home to visitors to Elephant Island by the Endurance Memorial at Point Wild.
  • Antarctica is home to some unique sub-species that you will only find in this region of the world. CRUISE TO FALKLAND ISLANDS

  • CRUISE TO PORT STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS
    • The Falklands are geologically a part of Patagonia and the Scotia arc that stretches from the southern tip of South America eastwards through the Falklands South Shetland islands to join with the tip of the Antarctic peninsula. The Falklands are a place where the modern world has arrived, but they manage to maintain much of the lure and appeal of a time gone by. A place that seems somehow vaguely familiar but not quite in "that combination" of people, town, scenery, climate and wildlife. The Falklands are sometimes described as being "More British than Britain". The incredible journey will give you many photographic opportunities for your life. Norwegian sails to Antarctica, which will provide guests with a unique opportunity to be part of cruising history. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime holiday that you will never forget while witnessing the icy-blue glaciers of Antarctica. Free time to explore the beauty of the continent. Day 18

FALKLAND ISLANDS

  • As the sea breeze grazes your face and you look around at the colourful houses surrounding you, you realize you're in a truly special place, Port Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands. You will disembark Falkan Islands at 06.00 hrs. Cruises to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, are often a returning point for a visit from Antarctica. A territory of the United Kingdom, this little harbour was once a base for Antarctic whaling operations. The port was also a British naval base during World War II. A charming settlement of houses on a gentle hillside overlooking the magnificent natural harbour. Like many islands the world over, the local availability of building materials dictates the character of the town and Stanley is first noted for the brightly painted corrugated iron roofs to many of the dwellings. A stroll through town will bring you face to face with the Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch. In fact, it's kind of hard to miss this towering memorial: It was built from the jawbones of two blue whales in 1933 to commemorate 100 years of British administration in the Falklands. It stands tall outside of the most southerly Anglican cathedral in the world. Consecrated in 1892, it features beautiful stained-glass windows, a pipe organ that came all the way from Ireland. If you're looking for the best things to do in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, and you're interested in exploring more of this small town, head to Gypsy Cove where you can see penguins, sea lions and more. The cruise will depart from Falkland Islands to Buenos Aires at 16.00 hrs. Free time for shopping and to explore the city. Dinner and overnight stay on board.
